It was determined by the Omega Chapter Council that officers in command of planetary ground units should be equipped with an assault saber that could easily distinguish them on the battlefield. They soon found, however, that a simple variant would not suit their needs. An evolutionary design would be required, which gave rise to the Eclipse.
